Scripture Passage for the Day

Fasting like yours to-day
will never bear your prayers
on high.
Would I choose such a fast,
such penances?

To droop your head like a bulrush,
to lie in sackcloth and ashes --
is that what you call 'fasting'
a day the Eternal would
approve?

Is not this my chosen fast,
the Lord, the Eternal, asks,
to loosen all that fetters men
unfairly,
and to relax its grip,

to free poor debtors from their
bonds,
and break what binds them?
It is to share your food with
hungry men,
and take the homeless to your
home,
to clothe the naked when you
see them,
and never turn from any
fellow-creature.
Then shall light dawn for you,
with healing for your wounds;

you shall advance, your goodness
in the van,
and the Eternal's glory as
your rear-guard;
the Eternal will answer when
you call,
and, when you cry, he will say,
'Here am I!'

Is 58:4b-9a Moffatt Translation

Thursday, May 26, 2011

Scripture Passage for the Day

You are not fasting today so as to have your voice reach on high. Can such a fast be the kind I choose -- a man to bow down his head like a rush, to lie in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call fasting, or an acceptable day to the LORD? Is not this the fast I have chosen: to loosen the bonds of wickedness; to undo the bands of the yoke; to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and to take the outcast poor into your home; not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

Then shall your light break forth lilke the dawn, and your healing shall follow speedily; your righteousness shall go before you, and the glory of the LORD shall follow your as your rear guard. Then you will call and the LORD shall answer; you will cry and He shall say, Here am I.

Is 58:4b-9a Berkeley Version

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Scripture Passage for the Day

On such a day the fast you are keeping
is not one that will carry your voice to heaven.

Is this the kind of fast that I require,
a day of mortification such as this:
that a person should bow his head like a bulrush
and use sackcloth and ashes for a bed?
Is that what you call a fast,
a day acceptable to the LORD?

Rather, is not this the fast I require
to loose the fetters of injustice,
to untie the knots of the yoke,
and set free those who are oppressed,
tearing off every yoke?

Is it not sharing your food with the hungry,
taking the homeless poor into your house,
clothing the naked when you meet them,
and never evading a duty to your kinsfolk?

Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and new skin will speedily grow over your wound;
your righteousness will be your vanguard
an the glory of the LORD your rearguard.

Then, when you call, the LORD will answer;
when your cry to him, he will say, 'Here I am.'

Is not this the fast that I choose:
to loose the bonds of injustice,

and bring the homeless poor into your house;
when you see the naked, to cover them,

“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen:

Seldom do Kathy and I have the same day off, so we seldom get to do anything special. Thursday I took off for the Friends of the Library Book Sale (was Kathy's regular day off) and rather than go back to work for just one day, took off Friday as well (also Kathy's regular day off). That gave us the opportunity to go to Garvan Woodland Gardens to watch the koi. The water was muddy from the recent heavy rains, but it was still a peaceful and enjoyable afternoon. These are what I created from some of my photos.

Scripture Passage for the Day

he rights those who are
wronged,
he feeds those who are hungry;
the Eternal sets the captives free.
the Eternal gives the blind
their sight,
the Eternal raises those who are
bowed down,
the Eternal preserves poor
foreigners,
the widow and the orphan he
relieves;
the Eternal loves those who are
good,
but the ungodly life he ruins.

Ps 146:7-9 Moffatt Translation

who administers justice on behalf of
the oppressed; who gives bread to
the hungry --
the LORD, who loosens the chains of
those who are bound.
The Lord opens the eyes of the
blind;
the LORD loves the righteous.
The LORD protects the immigrants;
He relieves orphans and widows,
and He reverses the path of the
ungodly toward ruin.

Ps 146:7-9 Berkeley Version

The LORD feeds the hungry

The LORD restores sight to the blind

the LORD loves the righteous
and protects the stranger in the
land;
the LORD gives support to the
fatherless and the widow,
but thwarts the course of the
wicked.
